MAC Surfacing was established in 2004. The trade behind it began much earlier, with the same West Midlands family learning the work, building the operation and earning trust one job at a time.
» Where the story starts
Before MAC had a name, 3 generations of the same family had worked in surfacing. The first generation began on the tools, worked through the trade and later built a business of its own. The head office it operated from is still part of MAC today.
The company has grown, but the operating belief has stayed simple: own the capability customers depend on. Plant, people, planing, transport and workshop support remain under one accountable team.

The dates matter, but the decisions behind them tell the real story. Each chapter added more control over delivery and more responsibility for the result.
2004–2007
MAC was incorporated in 2004 around a mini paver, a beavertail and a practical understanding of what surfacing teams needed on site. The early years were about building a dependable base, adding the right machine and putting down roots in Tipton.
2008–2010
Transport, larger paving capacity and road planing followed. Each step reduced reliance on somebody else’s diary and gave customers a more joined up answer when a job needed to move.
2011–2015
The next period brought larger programmes, another depot and deeper investment in systems and maintenance. MAC was becoming more than a collection of machines. It was becoming a coordinated operation.
2016–2019
Larger planing capacity and formal training widened what MAC could support. Leadership evolved too, passing responsibility through the family while bringing broader operational experience into the business.
2020–2022
Changing working conditions tested every part of the operation. MAC adapted, kept supporting live programmes and continued to reinvest in the plant, workshop and people behind the service.
2023–2026
Jake Wherton became Managing Director in 2023, bringing experience from across the business into its day to day leadership. MAC marked 20 years in 2024, set a new delivery benchmark in 2025 and entered 2026 with further investment in plant, transport and the crews behind them.
Today
Today, paving, planing, labour, transport and workshop support work together under the same name. The kit has changed and the reach has grown, but MAC still measures itself by the same thing: whether the people and plant turn up ready to do the job properly.
The business grew by taking responsibility for more of the job, not by passing it on.
