2004-2017: The journey so far

MAC Surfacing, leading surfacing solutions provider was born in 2004, with Mark Copson building the Tipton based company from the ground up. Originally named SM Pavers the company now has a story to tell that spans over a decade and through a recession.

Whilst initial operations were focused around a mini paver and a beavertail, MAC now offers the complete surfacing solution incorporating planer and paver hire, labour supply, plant haulage and maintenance, not to mention a 24-hour support service to make sure their quality of customer service matches their quality of works service.

Purchasing their own premises in 2006, the company very quickly in 2007 followed that with 2 major events in their history. Firstly, the company name became MAC Surfacing, and secondly, the appointment of Jake Wherton, who a decade on is now a Director of the company.

2009 saw great investment in machinery and son, Marc Copson joins the family business. 2010 brought a new division, as planing was added to the MAC repertoire under the banner, MACPLANE. Over the next few years there were significant investments made into in house maintenance and software systems, as well as new depots around the UK.

More recently, the company expanded their Tipton office site and underwent a rebrand in 2015 to bring a fresh, new look.

2017 has been a big year so far, with founder Mark Copson taking a move to the Chairman role, and Mark Hibbert stepping into his shoes as Managing Director.

Over 13 years, MAC has grown into a nationally recognised leader in surfacing solutions, starting out as one-man band and now employing 110+ staff.

With depots around the UK, their coverage is far and wide, and puts them in a great place to serve their customers across the country by having such a broad regional presence.

Marc Copson, son of founder Mark and current Director of MAC Surfacing told us:

MAC Surfacing Landmarks:

2004 - Company Incorporated. Mini Paver and Beavertail purchased

2005 - Midi Paver added to the fleet

2006 - Tipton depot purchased

2007 - Name changed to MAC Surfacing. Key appointment of Jake Wherton, Director, to the team

2008 - MC Transport incorporated. Hotbox added to the fleet

2009 - Standard size paver purchased - a Bomag BF600. Marc Copson, son - joins family business

2010 - Planing Division established. ISO9001 achieved

2011 - Amey, London becomes a first key contract to MAC Surfacing. Oldbury Depot purchased for expansion

2012 - IT investment made

2013 - In-house maintenance strengthened. The company moved to Vogele vehicles.

2014 - MAC group merged. Office expansion in Tipton. Mark Hibbert, Sales Manager bought into the business.

2015 - Company rebrand. MAC received AI award Supply Chain Partner of the Year. UWCB charity event raising £5,000+

2016 - 2m planer introduced. London office implemented.

2017 - Mark Copson moves from MD to Chairman. Mark Hibbert takes on MD role
